Olivia set for Danish boxing adventure

STUDLEY teenage boxer Olivia Freeman will be travelling to Denmark to compete in the 2015 Haslev Box Cup.

The tournament takes place in late September and Olivia’s Birmingham-based club has secured a sponsor to ensure she can be given this wonderful opportunity in the international event, which brings together the best boxers from around Europe for two days of action with the prize of an international gold medal as the ultimate goal.

The 14-year-old trains at the very successful Jewellery Quarter Boxing Club three days a week and also completes a run programme and a strength and conditioning programme in her own time as well.

Club coach Nigel Lakin said: “Because of the tremendous dedication and hard work Olivia has put in this year and the undoubted talent she is showing, it has become apparent we have an outstanding athlete in our club.

“Olivia has been working tremendously hard for the past 12 months and we are increasingly finding it very difficult to secure competitive opportunities for her in England.

“This year Olivia has competed in only three bouts and we feel she is now at the stage in her development where we need to put her in with more experienced opponents to bring the very best out of her.

“The Box Cup provides a great opportunity and this is why we have worked so hard to ensure Olivia can attend the event in Denmark.”

Olivia added: “I really enjoy my training and I have learnt so much over the past 12 months and I cannot wait to make the trip to Denmark and represent my club.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity and the hard work everyone at the club puts in to make sure myself and the rest of our team become the very best that we can be.

“The coaches make us work very hard but we always have fun during our training and the whole squad are like a family unit.”

Jewellery Quarter Boxing Club is staffed entirely by volunteers and exists to create competitive boxing opportunities for people aged ten to 40. If you have an interest in competing at the club you can check out the club on Facebook or call coach Mick Maguire on 07812 034571.
