A MASSIVE gamble by Redditch businesswoman Ros Sidaway to move her record shop out of the town centre to Headless Cross has paid off – thanks to the magic of music.
Now, 12 months on, retro record specialists Vintage Trax, on Birchfield Road, is preparing to celebrate its first birthday as the popularity of vinyl records continues to grow.
And it’s not just Redditch people who are supporting the shop. Customers are coming from as far afield as Bromsgrove, Droitwich, Alcester, Stratford, and Birmingham to ‘dig through the crates’ of preloved LPs and 7”/12” singles encompassing most music genres.
“It was definitely a risk worth taking, but it was a gamble to come out of the town centre – you just don’t get the footfall and it took us sometime to get some traction,” she said.
However since then the business has gone from strength to strength.
“Record shops are ‘destination’ shops – vinyl record buyers are prepared to travel to find what they want. We are on a main road, just two minutes off the A448 dual carriageway, and on the 47/48 Redditch Circular bus route so access is very good – and there is free on road parking,” added Ros.
“The other week we had a couple of young lads in from Bearwood who were just looking for record shops and they were on their way to Nottingham to find vinyl.”
To celebrate the big day Ros and her sister Teresa who also works in the shop, are looking forward to welcoming customers, both returning and new, from 10.30am – 5pm tomorrow, Saturday (February 27) to join in the birthday celebrations.
As well as refreshments and special offers, customers will be able to collect their loyalty card and view the recently set up “John Bonham – Local Lad to Global Rock Star” display wall in tribute to the Led Zeppelin drummer who was born just yards from the shop.
