ALVECHURCH suffered a 2-1 home defeat against bottom club Stratford Town following victory by the same scoreline away at Barwell.

Tim Flowers suffered defeat against former club Stratford at Lye Meadow as the Bards picked up their first points of the season.

A late goal from Jessy Bavanganga gave Church hope after the Bards had Josh Roney sent off just past the hour mark.

However, goals from Henry Landers and Dan Lafferty proved enough to lift Stratford off the bottom of the table and condemn Church to defeat.

That came after Alvechurch overcame a red card to Shay Willock to win away at Barwell at Kirkby Road.

A Prince Mancinelli penalty put the home side ahead only for Sam Perry to draw Church level on the stroke of half time.

And despite losing Willock to a red card early in the second period, Jose Marquez marked his Church debut with the winning goal.

The results mean Alvechurch sit ninth in the Southern League Premier Central table.

Church fell behind against Stratford after 19 minutes as Landers powered home after Redman Evans kept out Fin Brennan’s initial effort.

And the visitors doubled their lead on 58 minutes when Lafferty found the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Stratford then had Roney sent off five minutes later after he picked up a second yellow card following a rash challenge.

Church eventually made the man advantage count two minutes from time as Bavanganga forced the ball home following a melee in the box.

However, the home side could not find an equaliser in seven minutes of injury time.

That came after Church secured their first away win of the season at Barwell.

The visitors fell behind on 18 minutes as Prince Mancinelli scored from the penalty spot after Kornell McDonald drew a foul in the box.

Church equalised on the stroke of half time when Perry’s half-volley from 20-yards out hit the post and ricocheted into the net off of the goalkeeper’s back.

However, Alvechurch had Willock sent off in first-half injury time for an alleged stamp on Barwell’s Brad Gascoigne.

Despite playing with a man less for the entirety of the second half, Church completed the turnaround on 64 minutes as Forest Green Rovers loanee Marquez applied a first time finish to a cutback.

Alvechurch play Barwell again in the FA Cup on Saturday, August 30 with kick-off at 3pm at Lye Meadow.
