Famous names to star in charity cricket match

STARS from the worlds of sport and entertainment will be sharing their love of cricket in a charity match at Ragley Hall on Sunday.

Australian cricket legend Jeff Thomson, England cricketer Ryan Sidebottom and football heroes Paul Merson and Barry Fry will be among the celebrities when the world famous Bunbury CC face a Harry the Fish XI in a game hosted by Alcester & Ragley CC.

It has been organised by Harry Dyke, a 19-year-old fishmonger at Hillers Fish Shop in Dunnington, in a bid to raise £20,000 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and the English Schools Cricket Association Under-15 Bunbury festival.

Harry, a passionate cricket fan, decided to organise the match for leukaemia after losing his grandmother and some of his closest friends to the disease.




The Bunbury players will also include the Weasley twins from the Harry Potter movies, James and Oliver Phelps.

Former Aston VIlla player Merson will be playing for Mr Dyke’s team. while his ex-Arsenal team-mates Paul Davis and Perry Groves are also involved, along with TV presenter Nick Owen, ex-Villa favourite Gary Shaw, former Birmingham City player Mick Harford and ex-Worcestershire cricketers Neal Radford, Gavin Haynes and Tim Curtis.


As well as the match, there will be an attempt for the longest bowling run-up in the world by Alcester & Ragley cricketer Ian Biddle, plus an auction, laser clay pigeon shooting, music and other entertainment.

Biddle is making a bid to get in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest bowling run-up in the world.

He will be setting off from Alcester Town Hall around 2.45pm and will run two miles to deliver the opening ball at the grand charity match at Ragley Hall.

The record at the moment is 1.6 miles, set in Blackburn in 2010.

Standard tickets are priced at £5. Gates are open from 2pm for the general public.
