REDDITCH Chess Club have made a successful start to their campaign in the Birmingham & District Summer League winning two and drawing one of their first three games.
Last week’s win at Shirley/Wythall propels them to second place in the league table.
This after finishing as Division Three Champions in the Birmingham & District 2016/17 Winter League, losing just three of their 66 boards all season.
The first team squad features Dan Lambourne on board one. He excelled with a 90 per cent record and was ably assisted by veteran Glen Cox, ex-Redditch club champion, Gary Boswell who returned to the area this year and Nigel Towers who is also a newcomer to the team and is captaining the summer league team.
The Redditch B team also had a solid winter season staving off relegation in Division Four of the Birmingham League on the final day against Warley/Quinborne with Toni Reed securing the victory with a stunning attack.
Her 50 per cent score over the season secured her the accolade of club’s most improved player at the recent AGM.
The club continues to organise a varied programme of events, including a recent visit by Grandmaster Jon Speelman who gave a talk on endgames.
The club meets every Tuesday at 7.30pm at the St John the Evangelist Church Hall on Greenlands Avenue. If you are interested in playing at any level please contact secretary Michele Clack on 01527 452967 or by email: [email protected]
