Quickfire start inspires Alcester

ALCESTER maintained their momentum with a 33-19 victory over visitors Old Saltleians in Saturday’s friendly.

As with recent weeks, Alcester started the game well and within a few minutes were ahead when centre Jack Green ran in to score from distance.

Soon afterwards man of match Phil Birks picked up and barged his way over and full back Frazer Jackson made it 12-0 with the first of his four successful conversions.

The visitors’ strong mauling game got them back into the game with a try before the Green brothers ran in two more tries before half time. The first came from second row George before Jack scored his second of the afternoon.

At 26-5 up at half time, Alcester were well in command, but the second half was a much closer contest.

An injury to flanker Matt Alderman left Alcester a player down for an extended period of the game and the Old Salts forwards pinned Alcester into their 22m zone for large parts of the half.

The visitors closed the gap with their second try of the game before the hosts produced the best score of the day when a break from scrum half Dan Marcus saw him link up with Birks and Jake Grainger, who in turn found second row Louis Smith who looped a long pass to Jamie Harland to finish off a fine try.

Alcester did concede a third try late on but the home side held on to win comfortably.

Fifth placed Alcester resume their Midlands Three West (South) campaign at home to seventh placed Old Coventrians on Saturday.

Alcester 2nds were beaten 42-26 by Coventrians in the league.

Alcester struggled to field a side, having to borrow players from their opposition for not the first time this season.

Their tries came from Glyn Smith (2), Cian Allen and a borrowed Coventrians player, whilst Luke Spencer kicked three conversions.
