It's derby delight for Kingfishers

REDDITCH saw off local rivals Bromsgrove to net their second win of the West Midlands Premier Division season in entertaining fashion on Saturday.

Hosts Redditch began well and Harry Capewell gave them the lead but the visitors rallied to take a 2-1 advantage.

The Kingfishers replied by winning a short corner from which Andy Billingham’s strike deflected into the path of James Makin who turned the ball home from the cutest of angles.

This gave Redditch the motivation they required and victory was sealed when Capewell charged forward past the Bromsgrove midfield to feed Harry Williams whose assist set up Josh Brown to control the ball in mid-air before firing home.

Redditch 2nds were left to rue missed chances as they were beaten 2-1 at high-flying Warwick in the West Midlands Premier 2nd League.

The visitors were dominant for long periods of the game after taking an early lead through Miles Haslam’s finish which capped a fine move.

However, despite defending well, Redditch’s failure to turn their dominance into goals proved costly as the hosts struck twice late on.

Redditch 4ths bagged their first win of the Central League South West 2 season as they triumphed 3-1 at Bromsgrove 5ths.

Despite going a goal down early on from a well worked Bromsgrove short corner routine, the young Redditch side bounced back with a goal from Mark Sadler, who then netted his second goal of the game early in the second half by striking under the advancing keeper.

Redditch continued to apply pressure in the closing stages and were awarded a short corner which Sadler struck well at the keeper and captain Josh Checkley was on hand to strike home the rebound.

Jo Cook and Vicky Allen were on the mark for the unbeaten Kingfishers, who lead the way on goal difference from Bromsgrove heading into Saturday’s visit to lowly Old Halesonians.

A late goal sentenced Redditch Ladies 2nds to a 2-1 defeat at home to high-flying Tenbury 2nds in Worcestershire League Division Three.

After falling behind, Millie Melliard’s goal drew Redditch level and they were pressing for a winner in the closing stages, only to be undone at the other end.

Despite results not going their way, Redditch captain Kayleigh Young is very impressed with how the new-look team is developing as individuals and as a team.
