Quadruple glory for Walkwood

Redditch Editorial 19th Jul, 2018   0

WALKWOOD CE Middle School’s year six boys’ football team capped an outstanding year with a comprehensive 10-0 win in the nine-a-side Worcestershire County Cup final.

Their latest success clinched an unprecedented quadruple, with the boys having previously won the district seven-a-side, county seven-a-side and English Schools’ Football Association Central seven-a-side, in which they competed against fellow county champions from across the Midlands and teams as far afield as Huddersfield and Lincoln at Nottingham Trent University.

In winning the Central competition, they qualified for the ESFA Danone Nations Cup Finals held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry and reached the semi-finals from a field of more than 6,500 entrants.

The boys won all three of their group games against regional champions from Cheshire, Sussex and Oxfordshire before losing on penalties in the semi-finals.

They were incredibly unlucky as they scored the most goals on the day and did not concede a single goal.

Their coach Nick Sanders said: “The boys have had a fantastic year and have grown collectively, displaying teamwork and determination throughout every fixture and competition they have entered.

“I couldn’t be any more prouder of them all and their commitment to school football. The team itself is admirable and what football is all about.”

Next year, the team will enter both the Playstation National Cup and compete for the first time in the elite schools version of the competition too.
