SPECIAL Olympics Redditch is kicking-off the new season in style thanks to a £300 kit sponsorship from Anglian Home Improvements.
The company has pledged its support to Special Olympics Great Britain by kitting its players out for the new campaign and the Redditch squad – one of the West Midlands region’s 16 groups – is among the recipients of Anglian’s ‘Support for Sport’ campaign.
Backed by Olympic hockey gold medallist Sam Quek MBE, Support for Sport was launched by the home improvement firm to put the spotlight on all those who play a sport at a grassroots level.
Anglian appealed for community clubs to apply for one of 20 kit sponsorships worth £300. Guest judge Quek helped to select the lucky winners, with Special Olympics Redditch one of the teams chosen.
Founded in 1994, Special Olympics Redditch plays a major role in the community by bringing people of all ages together through sport.
The team, which trains at Trinity High School, is an accredited branch of Special Olympics GB and is a voluntary-operated group providing sports training for people with intellectual disabilities.
Training is given in various activities including basketball, badminton, uni-hoc, athletics and table tennis, with opportunities for members to get involved in competitions and events throughout the year.
Sarah Duffin, chairman at Special Olympics Redditch, said: “We are all so thankful to Anglian for this generous donation. We found out about the Support for Sport campaign and decided to submit an application, but it was a complete surprise to hear we’d been successful. We are all very excited!
“With the new kit, the team will not only look the part, but this gesture of support will help to foster an even greater sense of team spirit and positivity among the players and all those who help out at the club.”
Rachael Munby, marketing director for Anglian Home Improvements, said: “We are delighted so many teams across the country got behind Support for Sport. Special Olympics Redditch is a very deserving winner and it is brilliant to see them sporting the Anglian logo. We wish them the best of luck for their season ahead.”
Quek said: “It was incredibly tough to make a decision on the Support for Sport winners as there are some amazing teams out there making a difference to the lives of people – young and old – through participation in sport.
“Support from businesses such as Anglian can really help to boost morale and passion and my congratulations go to Special Olympics Redditch.”
