BOXING - Van-Gelder becomes two time National Development champion

Redditch Editorial 1st Dec, 2021   0

STUDIO Boxing Club’s Jay Van-Gelder has become a two time National Development champion after claiming the title at the England Boxing National Championships last weekend.

Van-Gelder won the Development title after beating Freddie Marshall by unanimous decision – having previously claimed the Junior class title in 2019 – at the Spiceball Leisure Centre in Banbury.

That came after he beat Faisel Hussain in the semi-final the previous day before going on to claim overall victory in the 52-56kg weight class.

The Redditch based club also had super heavyweight Simon Ibekwe in action in the elite national pre-quarter-finals only for the youngster to be beaten on points over three rounds.

Studio Boxing Club coaches Brian White and Gary Blower said: “Both lads have done themselves, our gym and Redditch boxing in general very proud.

“We’ve definitely turned a few heads and got people’s attention over the last six weeks.”

Van-Gelder boxed for and won the Midlands Youth Development title on his way to the semi-finals with a series of unanimous decision victories.

Super Heavyweight boxer Ibekwe claimed the Midlands Elite Super Heavyweight title earlier this month with a superb performance in the final.

The club is based at Millsborough House in Redditch and has a BBBoC licensed gym and trainers with the gym self-funded by Van-Gelder and Ibekwe.
