FOOTBALL - Redditch United beaten by Alvechurch in Birmingham Senior Cup quarter-finals

REDDITCH UNITED suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Alvechurch to exit the Birmingham Senior Cup at the quarter-finals stage.

Zak Brown struck twice for the home side, scoring either side of the break to condemn Redditch to defeat.

The result denied the Reds a place in the semi-finals in what was the fourth meeting between the two clubs this season.

And Redditch had goalkeeper Kieran Boucher to thank for keeping the game scoreless in the early exchanges when he made a terrific save to tip the ball onto the post.

Alvechurch then hit the post through Nicholas Clayton-Phillips before Daniel Waldron fired the rebound straight at Boucher.

And the Reds were indebted to Boucher again soon after when he made a save at full stretch to keep out Samuel McLintock’s effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Alvechurch finally made the breakthrough in first-half injury-time when Brown latched onto a ball in-behind the Redditch defence and produced a delightful chip that went in off the underside of the bar.

And the home side doubled their lead on 52 minutes when Brown curled an effort into the top corner, again clipping the underside of the bar, to all but seal Redditch’s fate.

Redditch are next in action away at league leaders Banbury United on Saturday, January 22 with kick-off at 3pm at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium.
