RUGBY UNION - Redditch return to winning ways against Atherstone

REDDITCH RFC ended a run of six consecutive defeats with a comprehensive six-try 33-12 victory against Atherstone.

Mikey Adams opened and completed the scoring for Redditch with James Mills, Stuart Brookes, Mikey Essex and Tommy Lyons also dotting down.

The result leaves Redditch in sixth place in the Midlands 5 West (South) table with just three fixtures left to play this season.

And the Kingfishers made the perfect start when Adams gathered James Mills kick into the space and ran in 40 metres to score virtually unopposed.

Redditch struck again soon after when Mills produced a stunning dummy to create a large hole in the Atherstone defence which he strolled through to score.

The home side added their third try when an erratic throw from a defensive lineout was gathered by Brookes who forced his way over the line.

Atherstone responded with a length of the field try only for Redditch to run in their fourth try before half time when Essex dotted down after several phases to send the hosts into the break with a 20-5 lead.

A series of penalties preceded Atherstone’s second try which was converted before Will Spires finally found his range with a penalty to further extend the Kingfishers lead.

And Redditch put the game to bed with two tries in quick succession as Tommy Lyons scored his first try for the club before Adams wrapped up the win with his second of the match.

Redditch are next in action at home to leaders Birmingham and Solihull on Saturday, April 2 with kick-off at 3pm at Redditch Rugby Club.
