A CONTROLLED explosion was carried out in Hopwood after anglers found an unexploded Second World War hand grenade.

The incident happened on land off Lea End Lane at 5.10pm last Sunday.

Police Safer Neighbourhood Team officers who were out on routine patrol were flagged down by the magnet fishers

The officers cordoned off the area to ensure public safety whilst they waited for the Military Of Defence (MoD) bomb disposal team to arrive.

Around an hour later the explosives experts arrived and carried out a controlled detonation.
