THERE’S a rare chance to view stunning church mosaics, regarded as among the finest in England, in a special tour in nearby Droitwich.
It’s this Saturday, February 22 at 2pm at the Sacred Heart Church in the spa town.
Visitors will discover that inside the brick exterior of the church are walls decorated to the ceiling with images telling stories from the Bible and aspects of the history of Droitwich and St Richard de Wych, the town’s patron saint.
The church was commissioned by Walter Loveridge Hodgkinson of Rashwood Court as a memorial to his wife Catherine and was started in 1919 and dedicated in 1921.
The mosaic decorations were begun in 1921 and took 12 years to complete using eight-and-a-half tons of quarter-inch glass.
Solihull artist Gabriel Pippet designed the mosaics, and they were installed by Maurice Josey.
The tour will be led by David Holden of the Historic Droitwich and Dodderhill Research Group and all are welcome.
The cost is £2 and there is ample parking behind the church which is on Worcester Road, Droitwich WR9 8AZ
