A REDDITCH man who creates the sets for some of TV’s most popular dramas has been honoured at the British Film Designers Guild awards.

Art Director, John West, who lives in Winyates Green, won an award at the British Film Designers Guild 70th year celebrations held at the Ballroom at Pinewood Studios on Saturday (January 28), scooping the best TV Drama Production Design Award.

John is currently the Art Director on Victoria series two, which is in pre-production at the Yorkshire Film Studios and everyone from the Victoria team was invited onstage as Production Designer, Michael Howells and Fabrice Speller the Supervising Art Director received the award.

Surprised

John said: “I was surprised and delighted when our team won the Best Production Design. You hope to win these awards – but it still comes as a surprise when you succeed.

“We are a team and we could not have done it without eachother. We knew that we were doing something special but did not realise how well it would succeed.

“It is wonderful to be recognised by the membership of the British Film Designers Guild as they represent some of the best best international art and design talent in the film industry.

“I am very pleased that so many of us were at the ball to see Jeremy Irons and Bill Nighy there to do the presentation.”

The project is one of the biggest John has ever worked on, with each episode costing more than £1 million and the huge Buckingham Palace set taking up 34,500 square feet of floor space.

The 67-year-old is also known for his work with the Palace Theatre where he has designed several seasons of productions.
