A REDDITCH lad working in London’s West End is helping to bring the hit comedy musical The Wedding Singer to the Birmingham New Alexandra Theatre.
Associate producer Sam Griffiths was a member of Break-a-Leg Theatre Company from the age of seven and was an active member of Redditch’s top performing Indigo Arts in his teenage years, where he honed his love for live entertainment.
At Kingsley College, now Tudor Grange Academy, he studied performing arts and had lead roles in school productions.
“I went to Aberystwyth University to study a with a BSc Econ in International Politics and Intelligence Studies, and whilst there we were the first student company to produce a full-scale musical (FAME) at the local Arts centre – and that was where I really got my bug for producing theatre,” said Sam.
“I then interned for leading West End producer Kenny Wax on The Play That Goes Wrong (West End) and the UK Tour of the hit musical, Top Hat.”
Sam is now on the cusp of achieving his Master of Arts in Stage and Event Management from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
Currently he is working as the regional programmer at the Ambassador Theatre Group, putting theatre and entertainment into the 22 regional venues across ATG’s portfolio, including the Birmingham New Alexandra Theatre.
“The Wedding Singer is my first venture into professional producing. I am the associate producer on the 2017 UK & Ireland tour, visiting 30 theatres across the UK,” said Sam.
“It’s been a lot of hard work to get to this point in my career at the age of 26, including interning for seven months where I didn’t get a salary. l was lucky my parents could help support me.”
