On 5 July 2025, Villa Park in Birmingham, home of Aston Villa Football Club, became the site of a historic moment for the city and one of its favourite cultural exports. Iconic rock/metal band Black Sabbath hosted its farewell concert, Back to the Beginning.

A rock show and charity event, Villa Park became a heavy metal hub for the day as famous acts from around the world descended on Birmingham for the 10-hour show. Not only did the concert celebrate the birthplace of heavy metal, but it also became a record-breaking charitable event, and a new cultural milestone for the city and the surrounding area.

A Homecoming for Birmingham and Beyond

Towns across the West Midlands felt the impact of the event. For people in Redditch, it was a chance to reconnect with one of the icons of the region. It was a movement to honour a timeless musical act and the heavy metal culture they created, which has since become a major global community. It was also the first time in two decades.

For 45,000 lucky fans in the stadium, the show was an unforgettable experience. However, the power of streaming technology opened virtual turnstiles to allow 5.8 million people to watch online. It was shown globally through a two-hour delay and then remained available on-demand for 48 hours.

The popularity of live streamed shows is only continuing to increase, shows how live streaming is expanding modern entertainment. Sites like Netflix have even embraced this, beginning to live steam sporting events and award shows. Across gaming and iGaming too, the UK online casino industry have utilised a similar approach, providing polished live streamed games, that use a real live-dealer and sleek interfaces to recreate an immersive casino experience. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the event was live streamed, and that it was so popular beyond Villa Park.

Villa Park: More Than Just a Football Stadium

This is not the first time that Villa Park has served as a marquee stadium for major gigs. In fact, it hosted a who’s who of the music industry. Legends like Bruce Springsteen (1988, 2023), Bon Jovi (2013), and Pink (2023) has all called Villa Park home for a night. Other notable performers over the years include Rod Stewart, Robert Palmer, Belinda Carlisle, Guns N’ Roses, Kendrick Lamar and SZA. In 1983, Duran Duran held its own benefit concert in the stadium.

Now the ground can count Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Metallica, and more, all of whom were performers during Black Sabbath’s farewell. This highlights Villa Parks’ cultural

importance in Birmingham and the region. The stadium is a venue for sports, music, and charity. It also remains modern and is currently having an expansion to the North Stand in time for Euro 2028.

What the Concert Meant Locally

Back to Beginning was a single event on a single day, but it is set to have a longer impact on the local area:

Economic boost: Massive crowds brought more business to local companies, even as far away as Redditch to meet accommodation demand.

Cultural importance: It was a milestone for Birmingham and cemented the city’s place in music history.

Charity impact: The show raised £140 million for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Acorns Children’s Hospice, and Cure Parkinson’s.

Black Sabbath’s farewell at Villa Park was a milestone for music and especially fans of heavy metal. It was also a major moment for the culture of Birmingham and the Midlands, a significant contributor to charity and the local economy, and a reminder that Villa Park is a premier destination for entertainment and culture.
