Coppelia, Birmingham Royal Ballet

Birmingham Hippodrome

WHAT a perfect evening’s entertainment Birmingham Royal Ballet served up here.

A stunning set, breathtaking dancing, beautifully timed comedy and Delibes’s superb score all combined in this, the lightest of ballets to delight an enthusiastic audience.

From the famous opening mazurka to the final scene, time seemed to flash past as if in a dream.

The story is of course well known – Swanilda’s lover Franz falls for Dr Coppelius’s life-like mechanical doll, whom he has glimpsed on a balcony.

What can a jealous Swanilda do to discover the charms of her rival and win back her lover?

This is a down to earth story – thee are no princes or princesses, witches or fairies here – and it is lovingly told.

Nao Sakuma was outstanding as Swanilda, and brought the house down with her stunning clockwork dance as the doll Coppelia.

Joseph Caley’s athletic Franz was the perfect foil while Michael O’Hare’s Dr Coppelius proved a gloriously mad inventor.

In between there are stirring ensemble pieces, breathtaking solos and comedy to bring a smile to everyone’s face.

Coppelia runs at the Hippodrome until Saturday, June 17.

Tickets cost from £11 on 0844 338 5000 or visit www.brb.co.uk.
