The Most Iconic Moments in Sporting History

Correspondent 11th Aug, 2022   0

There are some sporting moments that transcend time. These are legendary moments that capture a generation and are so incredible that they will be talked about for hundreds of years after. If you were lucky enough to witness these events live, you have joy in recounting your feelings, the setting, and creating a story around what happened. In this article, we look at six truly iconic events in sporting history.

Michael Jordan’s Final Shot Against the Utah Jazz in 1998

For me, Michael Jordan crossing Bryon Russell with less than 10 seconds, and scoring a perfect mid-range jumper to give the Chicago Bulls an 87-86 lead is the most iconic moment in sports history. If I were a betting man at the time, I would have put money on Jordan at a website like Betway to take that shot and score, and indeed he did. It would have been a bookmaker’s dream.

I remember watching that game and that moment on a VHS that my dad had recorded the night before. It was incredible! The Bull of course won the game, and it gave them their 6th NBA title in 8 years, and their second three-peat.

Maradona’s Hand of God in the 1986 World Cup

This is an iconic moment due to it’s infamy and it remains one of the most hotly debated events in FIFA World Cup history. It was the quarter finals of the 1986 World Cup and England were playing Argentina with the unbelievably talented Maradona.

The hand of god incident saw Maradona effectively punch the ball into the net to score a goal. However, it was allowed and this gave Argentina a 1-0 lead. Although Argentina went on to win 2-1, with possible the most incredible goal ever seen at a World Cup from Maradona again. There is no denying that had the hand of god been disallowed, the game could have turned out very different.

The Rumble in the Jungle

There are some boxing matches that have that much hype that they become the stuff of legend. One such bout and an iconic sporting moment was the Rumble in the Jungle. This was a heavyweight championship fight between prime boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

It is often dubbed as the greatest sporting event in the 20th century and it saw the heavy underdog Ali clinch an 8th round KO victory.

Muhammad Ali Lighting the Torch at the 1996 Summer Olympics

In 1996, legendary boxer Muhammad Ali was battling parkinson’s disease and it was making life incredibly difficult for him. Although retired from the sport for a long time, he was still a sporting icon and was asked to light the torch at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Seeing Ali bravely lift the torch and struggle against the crippling disease bought many to tears, and it is often the moment that people remember from those athletics games.

The Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Olympics

If you ask Americans about the Miracle on Ice, most of them immediately know what you mean. This was a defining event in the Olympics and stands out as one of the greatest underdog performances in sporting history.

In the 1980 Olympics, the USSR Hockey Team were the heavy favorites and had won gold meals in 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976. The odds were heavily stacked in their favor, and everyone expected them to win having previously thrashed the USA 10-3 in their last meeting.

However, the Americans won 4-3 and created the best David vs Goliath moment we have ever seen.

Jackie Robinson Breaking the Color Barrier

During the 1940’s, the US was still a heavily divided country and racism was relatively commonplace. As a result, there were not many African-Americans in professional sports. Major League Baseball was particularly bad, and it took legendary player Jackie Robinson to change this in 1947.

On April the 15th, he became the first African-American major league baseball player as he made his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers. This radically broke the color barrier and effectively ended segregation in professional baseball in the US.

There are many more iconic moments, which are your favorite? Perhaps your all-time list is completely different to this? For me, Michael Jordan’s game-clincher against the Jazz is THE greatest sports moment ever – but that’s purely due to my love of basketball, and what it meant during my childhood.
