As International Museum Day approaches, here are some of the top places to visit in Worcestershire

1. For the history hunters – Bewdley Musuem, Bewdley

Housed in a historic and unusual 18th century Butcher’s Shambles, this unique museum provides a fascinating insight into the growth and trades of Bewdley town. Kids can enjoy a hands on experience by going underground in the World War II air raid shelter. Adults and children (if they’re brave enough!) can dare to enter the old Town Jails and learn about the crimes of the 19th Century.

2. For the culture vultures – Museum of Royal Worcester

This modern museum stands on the site of the Royal Worcester porcelain works in the heart of Worcester. The Museum is arranged in three galleries, focussed on the Georgian, Victorian and Twentieth Century periods. An Exhibition Hall hosts an ongoing programme of events, workshops, and lectures. The original museum here was founded as a motivational tool, intended to inspire the factory workers!

3. For those looking for something different – The Museum of Carpet, Kidderminster

Opened in 2012, this museum is dedicated to the history of Worcestershire’s carpet industry where you can enjoy seeing a large collection of images and records relating to the town’s carpet industry as well as visiting the museum shop for wonderful local books, souvenirs and not forgetting rugs which include woven on our power looms which are all made locally.

4. For those with creative flair – Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum

This stunning museum is housed in a beautiful Victorian building in the heart of Worcester. The museum gallery has lots of amazing things to see including dinosaur footprints, Worcestershire Sauce archive and many more interesting objects from a real Roman mosaic to a Native American totem pole. Whilst you are here visit the engaging and interactive galleries dedicated to telling the story of the Worcestershire Regiment and the Worcestershire Yeomanry Cavalry and not forgetting the recreated Victorian Chemist Shop.

Every year since 1977 International Museum Day is organised worldwide on May 18.
