Cook-off sees new menu for Redditch school

BUDDING Masterchefs in Redditch have been battling it out in the kitchens of Woodfield Academy in their very own competition to become ‘Woodfield Chef of the Year 2023’.

Over 20 students across Year 5 and 6 rolled up their sleeves to prepare a two course meal that would be suitable to serve in the school canteen.

The students submitted their ideas before being invited to after school sessions where they practised their meals before the final of the competition.

The standard was high across both days. Staff judges enjoyed a wide range of tasty delights made by the children and gave very positive feedback to all who took part. Students were scored for taste and presentation for each dish and were given an average score from all the judges who rated them.

In first place was Maisie Bird who created an authentic Spaghetti carbonara with crispy pancetta followed by a Lotus Biscoff cheesecake. Both of these dishes will be recreated and served in our school canteen before the end of term.

In a close second place was Maya Ahmed who served a unique meal of kebab-wrapped boiled eggs served with spicy rice.

For dessert Maya made a Kit Kat cheesecake and many staff went back to seconds for both dishes.

In third place was Elisha Hussain. Elisha’s main meal of authentic chicken biryani was a star dish for many staff members.

Elisha also made some chocolate cupcakes with chocolate butter icing and jazzy buttons on top.

Year 8 cook-off, teacher Gemma Lawrence said: “The standard was high across both days. Staff judges enjoyed a wide range of tasty delights made by the children and gave very positive feedback to all who took part.

“Students were scored for taste and presentation for each dish and were given an average score from all the judges who rated them.

“There were also many other dishes that judges felt were too good not to feature in our school canteen.”

Mia from year 5 made a lovely strawberry cheesecake and Ellia in year 6 made her own take on Eton mess, using homemade meringue kisses with strawberries, white chocolate and whipped cream.

Poppy in year 6 also made a chocolate orange trifle sundae which was presented with such creativity.

All 3 of these desserts will also feature on our canteen menu before the end of term.

Gemma added: “Well done to all students who took part in the competition.

“They have all really enjoyed the experience and have gained confidence and further enthusiasm for cooking, which has been lovely to see.”
