VETERAN Kingfishers Harriers member John Watson rolled back the years when he competed in the new Birmingham International Marathon on Sunday.
John, one of the oldest members of the Redditch club, ran in the last Birmingham Marathon in 1985 and since then had hung up his marathon shoes and retired from 26.2-mile duty for 32 years until the reintroduction of the second city event.
At the age of 72, John dusted off his marathon shoes and entered the exciting competition, in which he clocked an outstanding time of 4hrs,44mins,21secs.
This was enough to clinch first place in his age group by more than two minutes.
Kingfishers Harriers chairman Ernie Heaton said: “This proves that, even at such a ripe age, John is still a champion of the club and endurance running. It was an absolutely outstanding performance.”
