Baltic gold for quickfire Rowand

REDDITCH Muay Thai ace George Rowand produced the fastest knockout in the entire tournament to return with a gold medal from the International Federation of Martial Arts (IFMA) Muay Thai Baltic Open Championships.

Thirteen-year-old St Augustine’s High School pupil Rowand had been training relentlessly ahead of the prestigious competition in Lithuania and he defeated his Estonian opponent in just 14 seconds to win the gold medal in his category.

The victory was the fastest of any fighter in the week-long event across both juniors and adults and was achieved by a head kick which led to an eight count and the fight being stopped.

Remarkably, all of the 18-strong Great Britain squad returned with a medal to their name as the nation finished second in the medal table.

Having learned plenty – particularly regards the different scoring system – from August’s Muay Thai Amateur Youth World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, Rowand was keen to put his new skills into practice and he did that with a devastating performance in the Baltic Open which features a strong line-up of fighters, especially from Russia.

Rowand will now turn his attentions to cementing his place in the Great Britain squad, knowing a good showing at the team trials in Glasgow in early March will secure his place in the GB set-up for another year.

If successful, Rowand will all being well be in action on the global stage again in another IFMA tournament in Turkey in September.
