Cup fever grips Reds Ladies

Redditch Editorial 15th Mar, 2018   0

REDDITCH United Ladies geared up for this Sunday’s historic Birmingham FA Women’s County Cup semi-final at Birmingham & West Midlands Ladies by booking their place in the last four of another cup competition.

Gary Barrell’s side were taken to extra-time before prevailing 3-2 at Solihull United in Sunday’s West Midlands Regional Women’s League Cup quarter-final.

The Reds had beaten the same opposition in the final of this competition last season but faced a much-improved Solihull side this time around.

Solihull were the more threatening side in the first half but the visitors took the lead against the run of play when Sofi Liperis’ cross was adjudged to have been handled in the box and Amy Kendall tucked away the resulting penalty.

Redditch produced better football in the second half but Solihull became more physical in their approach and created several chances as a result which were well saved by Kirsty Grigg.

However, as full-time neared, a fine through ball put the Solihull forward through on goal and she converted coolly to take the match into an extra 30 minutes.

The hosts had the momentum and indeed took the lead shortly into extra-time but the young Reds side showed the character they are renowned for and Maisie Farr cleverly switched the play to set up Liperis who surged past the full-back before arrowing a strike into the top corner to equalise.

Both sides threw the kitchen sink at each other in a bid to progress and it was the visitors’ day as Livvi Ashfield finished well following a well-worked corner to complete the scoring.

Should West Midlands Division One South leaders Redditch prevail in Sunday’s Birminhgam County Cup tie, they will face the winners of the match between West Bromwich Albion and Coventry United in the final.

This weekend’s opposition play two levels above the Reds, but the incentive is there to reach the final against opposition who both ply their trade in The FA Women’s Premier League.
