Delicious is just golden for Nigel

REDDITCH coach Nigel Lakin played his part in helping Jewellery Quarter Boxing Club fighters enjoy success at Europe’s biggest boxing event – the Haringey Box Cup – at London’s Alexandra Palace.

Lakin and the rest of the coaching team entered three boxers – Ellie Lyon, Boma Brown and Delicious Iwuchukwu – into the competition and Lyon and Brown both progressed to the second day semi-finals.

Both exited at this stage but not without producing performances to be proud of and will have gained from competing in such a huge tournament.

Iwuchukwu joined them in the semi-finals having defeated highly-rated Irish boxer Patrick Nevin in the quarter-finals of the Elite Super Heavyweight competition.

Saturday’s semi-final pitted Iwuchukwu against the Army’s multi-titled national champion Josh Woods. The contest was fought at an unbelievable pace from both men but the Jewellery Quarter boxer pulled away in the last round to inflict a count on his opponent and emerging as a 5-0 victor on the judges’ cards.

Now guaranteed a medal in Sunday’s final against Hoddesdon Boxing’s Gideon Antwi, Iwuchukwu was in no mood to settle for silver and took the fight to Antwi from the first bell.

The man from the Hertfordshire club gave his all but just could not match the high workrate and technical excellence of Iwuchukwu who triumphed 4-1 on the scorecards to become 2018 Haringey Box Cup Elite champion.

In only his second year of boxing, Iwuchukwu has four major titles – two British University titles, England Boxing National champion and Haringey Box Cup Elite champion.
