FA Cup debut ends in delight for Reds Ladies

Redditch Editorial 6th Sep, 2017   0

REDDITCH United Ladies will head into Sunday’s West Midlands Regional Women’s League Division One South opener at Rugby Town in buoyant mood after a winning debut in the Women’s FA Cup.

Gary Barrell’s side held their nerve to secure a hard fought 2-1 win over higher ranked visitors Stockingford AA Pavilion at the Trico Stadium on Sunday.

Both sides played their part in an entertaining tie, in which forward Ellie Gerhold put the hosts ahead by the break.

No quarter was given in the second half as United keeper Kirsty Grigg was called into action several times, whilst at the other end Georgia Harris’ long range strike crashed against the woodwork.

The Reds gave themselves breathing space when American Mayme Conroy made it 2-0 and there was further delight for Barrell and assistant Matt Lightfoot as young prospects Jodie Imms and keeper Natasha Smith proved their worth.

The visitors reduced their arrears in the dying moments but the hosts, for whom midfielder Kerstin Ballard was player of the match, had done enough to secure a milestone victory for the club.

Barrell’s side will host Staffordshire-based Goldenhill Wanderers, who play in West Midlands Regional Women’s League Division One North, in the second qualifying round on Sunday, September 17 (2pm).

Meanwhile, the Reds have been boosted by the news that Mckenzie Karas will be returning for a second spell at the Trico Stadium.

The versatile American played a major role in the team’s success last season, featuring in a number of positions and scoring numerous crucial goals to help United to runners-up spot and the League Cup.
