FOOTBALL - Ngandu rescues point for Alvechurch in draw with Sudbury

TIM Flowers praised the impact of his substitutes after Alvechurch came from behind to draw 1-1 against AFC Sudbury in midweek.

Substitute Jonny Ngandu came off the bench to draw Church level after Joe Neal opened the scoring for the visitors just before the hour mark at Lye Meadow.

The result means Church sit 11th in the Southern League Premier Central table.

And Flowers believes his subs changed the game against Sudbury as Ngandu, Marvellous Onabirekhanlen and Callum Sullivan all impressed from the bench.

Flowers said: “The boys that came on have seriously marked my card, I was very impressed with the effect they had on the game.

“They flipped it on its head and they could not get out of their half, it was wave after wave [of attack].

“We offered very little threat going forward in the first half and they looked the better team.

“We make mistakes in the middle third when we’re wide open, if you make mistakes higher up the pitch they’re not so costly.

“We’ve got to somehow get the second half performance we’re producing in the first half as well, then we’ll be a decent side.”

Sudbury broke the deadlock on 58 minutes when Neal pounced on some slack defending to fire the visitors into the lead.

However, Ngandu equalised for Church on 78 minutes with a fine first time finish into the top right corner after the ball bobbled around in the penalty area.

Alvechurch are next in action against Stourbridge on Saturday, March 29 with kick-off at 3pm at the War Memorial Athletic Ground.
