FOOTBALL - Sweeney has penalty saved as Redditch United draw with nine-man Needham Market

REDDITCH UNITED were unable to find a way past nine-man Needham Market as they were held to a goalless draw at the Trico Stadium.

Dan Sweeney saw a second-half penalty saved by Needham goalkeeper Marcus Garnham as the Reds failed to make their two-man advantage count.

The result means Redditch sit 16th in the Southern League Premier Central table, six points clear of the relegation zone.

Needham created the first chance of the game when centre-back Keiran Morphew hit a tame effort straight at Reds goalkeeper Kieran Boucher.

However, the game turned in the hosts favour just after the half hour mark when Callum Sturgess was shown a straight red card for violent contact following a challenge on Kieron Dawes.

And Redditch almost made their advantage count when Ryan Boothe’s header from close range was remarkably kept out by Needham keeper.

Despite being a man down, Needham almost took the lead before the break when Boucher tipped Callum Page’s effort around the post.

Redditch almost pressed home their advantage after the break when substitute Tiago Nassunculo fired narrowly over.

The pressure continued when Boothe was denied by another brilliant save by Garnham after excellent work from Lewis Hudson down the left before Sweeney’s follow up was scrambled clear.

And Sweeney was then given the chance to break the deadlock from the penalty spot after he judged to have been fouled inside the penalty area despite mass appeals from the visitors.

However, Garnham stood tall to keep the scores level before making another remarkable save to claw Ryan Wollacott’s bullet header over the bar from Luke Rowe’s cross.

The away side were reduced to nine-men in the final minute after Harvey Sayer received a second yellow card for time wasting.

And Redditch missed one last chance to take the points when Dennis Digie’s effort towards the top-right corner was expertly tipped onto the bar by Garnham.

The Reds are next in action away at Barwell on Saturday, February 5 with kick-off at 3pm at Kirkby Road.
