Gymnasts have plenty to celebrate

IT WAS an action-packed time at Worcestershire Gymnastics Academy when it held its annual teams colour competition, which was divided into two halves as there were so many gymnasts competing.

During the interval the club – based in Stock Wood near Inkberrow – held an opening ceremony to celebrate all the renovations that were carried out at the club.

The club benefited from the Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund. The club received £50,000 of National Lottery funding to upgrade facilities at the gym, which has helped more than 1,000 local youngsters get into sport since it opened its doors in 1998.

Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 inspire mark, which celebrates the link to the games. The improvements at the club will include repairs to the roof, a pit filled with foam to allow safe practice of difficult manoeuvres, a storage area and a viewing area.

Sport England chairman Richard Lewis said: “This National Lottery investment will create a lasting sporting legacy for the whole of Worcestershire.

“Worcester Gymnastics Club is one of hundreds of projects across England benefiting from lottery investment through the Inspired Facilities fund.”

The club is now thriving even more with the appointment of new head coach Andy Hall, who is waiting to take his level 5 High Performance Coach assessment and running a successful elite programme which took several boys to compete at the London Open with outstanding results.

Calum Hutison was crowned pommel champion and third overall, William Rogers gained a silver medal on the floor and Theo Thomas, Ethan Groom and Toby Uren also gave good accounts of themselves at their first London Open competition.
