REDDITCH RFC secured their first league win since the turn of the year against local rivals Five Ways Old Edwardians as the Kingfishers battled to a 15-5 success.

Aaron Atkinson, Matt Allen and Cal Razzak crossed for Redditch’s tries in a low-scoring affair as the home side continue to show signs of improvement.

And the result means Redditch remain bottom of the Counties 4 Midlands West (South) table.

Redditch scored the game’s opening try when Atkinson dove over after good work from Allen who burst through the defensive line twice in the first five minutes.

The visitors made life difficult for Redditch thereafter and kept the Redditch line on their toes as Jon Beale, Razzak, Allen, Joe Looker and Clarke Parker all made important tackles to keep the home side ahead.

And Redditch made it through to half time with a five-point lead, as errors began to creep into their game, with the Kingfishers unable to turn possession into points.

Following the restart, Five Ways drew level from a driving maul with Redditch unable to deal with the visitors’ larger pack.

However, Redditch’s defence was outstanding throughout to prevent any further scores with Joe Purvis the standout performer following some immense work at both ends of the field.

And Purvis created the break from which Allen barged over to score the game’s decisive try before Razzak dotted down out wide following a break from Beale.

Redditch are next in action against away at Keresley on Saturday, February 18 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Burrow Hill Lane.
