COOKHILL U11s secured the first junior silverware in the club’s history with a 12-run win over Wellesbourne in the Cotswold Hills League Plate final on Sunday morning.

Put into bat, Cookhill Roosters set a challenging score of 274-4 thanks to the batting of Zach Smith (13) and the final pair of Aidan Blann (11) and Ben Smith (15) who put on 37 in the last four overs.

In reply Wellesbourne got off to a very strong start as they reached 255-2 off the first eight overs, with Charlie Fisher taking 1-12.

The pressure was back on Cookhill but the Roosters rose to the challenge, responding with tight bowling spells in the latter overs and taking wickets at crucial times, backing it up with outstanding fielding.

Joseph Walker conceded just seven runs off his two overs, Ben Smith took 2-10 off three and Zach Smith 3-7 off three.

Wellesbourne eventually finished on 262-7, sparking jubilant scenes among the Cookhill players.

Cookhill coach Billy Harris said: “After making the final of the same competition last season and missing out (on victory), it was great to get over the line this season.

“It’s just reward for not only the eight players competing in the final but the other four squad players who contributed to the success of the team over the course of the season.

“Since establishing our junior section in 2014, it has been a privilege to see the development and growth of our juniors, with now in the region of 60 children participating in cricket at Cookhill.

“Success from the club’s point of view is not only about success on the field, it is great when it happens, but ensuring all our juniors have the opportunity to actively participate and build a lifelong passion for the game is the club’s primary aim.

“The success of our U11s only bodes well for the future and I am sure success on the field for our other age groups is just around the corner.”

Cookhill CC provide junior cricket for ages five to 14 and the season continues until September, with training sessions held on Friday evenings throughout the summer.
