FOOTBALL - Mike Fowler questions Redditch United's 'bravery' following Stamford draw

MIKE Fowler questioned the bravery of his Redditch United side following a frustrating draw against basement club Stamford.

The Reds rescued a late point at the Zeeco Stadium as Matty Warburton’s equaliser cancelled out Kyle Rowley’s opener.

The result means Redditch sit eighth in the Southern League Premier Central table.

However, Fowler felt his side did not show enough bravery both on the ball and in duels with opposition players.

Fowler said: “Let’s chuck that point on the bus and get out of here before somebody arrests us. We didn’t deserve anything.

“We had chances without being anywhere near anything respectable. It was really poor.

“We couldn’t get to grips with the game for 25 minutes. We were doing crazy, mad, stupid stuff.

“Heading it the wrong way, kicking it the wrong way. It was like some of them had never played football before.

“It’s really frustrating but the players have been excellent of late. You can’t just let it all come out after one performance.

“Certain individuals weren’t strong enough physically. They were able to just move people out of the way.

“People were maybe ducking out of headers and challenges. That’s not me and not what my players represent at this football club.

“If someone is struggling to take on feedback and I need better and they are unable to show a reaction then come and see me and we’ll move you on.

“It’s nothing personal. I’m not going to think anything less of you as a person. That is not going to wash with me.

“We need that bravery to take a hit or receive the ball under pressure or be a bit stronger in those duels.”

Redditch must now turn their attention to a tricky FA Cup tie against National League North side Buxton.

And Fowler expects to see an improved performance from his side in the second round qualifying clash.

Fowler added: “Buxton is going to be a huge step up in opposition. If we were at a normal performance level I’d be asking for another 20 per cent from them.

“I’ll be asking for 40 per cent more but I’m sure I’ll get it because it’s the FA Cup, it’s on a lovely surface and it’ll be a big crowd.

“The players will naturally get themselves up for it which is disappointing because you’ve got to be able to turn consistent performances twice a week.

“The games come thick and fast and before you know it a good run becomes a bad run.

“I just want a connected, hard-working performance. We haven’t really been fantastic in any of the games, we’ve just been very efficient.”

Redditch are next in action against Buxton in the FA Cup on Saturday, September 13 with kick-off at 3pm at the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium.
