WOMEN from Hereford and Worcesters fire service will be joining dozens of other female fire service personnel to embark on a summit attempt of the tallest mountain in Wales to raise money for charity.

Over 130 women from 28 fire services in the UK, including five women from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) will be attempting to climb Mount Snowdon on April 26, in support of the Firefighters Charity.

The fundraising challenge, organised by Women in the Fire Service UK, will help the Firefighters Charity in providing specialist lifelong support for members of the UK’s fire service community, giving individuals the tools to achieve mental, physical and social well-being.

Deb Davies, Karen Lambourn, Sam O’Brien, Michelle Hicks and Sara Hall from HWFRS will be helping the Firefighters Charity reach their fundraising goal of £2,500.

Deb Davies, watch commander at HWFRS said: “The climb is about empowering women in the fire service to inspire them to be more confident.

“It’s a way to celebrate and lift each other as we climb, helping us to see that we can reach our potential and achieve our goals.

“Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is expanding as we look for more on call fire fighters and we hope this challenge will inspire others to take on the baton and represent the amazing fire service and it’s community.”

Daisy Byron, area fire safety manager at Bedfordshire FRS, who was temporarily unable to carry out her fire service duties due to complications with having her two daughters, has organised the fundraising challenge to thank the Firefighters Charity for the mental and physical support she received from them.

She said: “The whole experience of support from the Firefighters Charity just helped me so much.

“You go there thinking the world is against you, then you meet other people all with their own issues and they make you think differently.”

Charlotte Smith, Community Fundraiser at The Fire Fighters Charity, says: “This is an incredible example of fire and rescue service representatives from right across the UK coming together for a common cause, and we’re so grateful to all the “women taking part in this climb for choosing us to support. Funds raised from events like this go such a long way in helping us continue to support thousands of fire service personnel and their families every year with their physical and mental “well-being. On behalf of everyone at The Fire Fighters Charity, a huge thank you to everyone involved and best of luck.”

The Firefighters Charity hopes to provide their specialist care to over 5,000 a year and must raise upwards of £9m every year to fund the costs of operating it’s support services.
