ALCESTER entertained Tanworth in Division Three of the Northfield Crown Green Bowling League and, with six winning cards, the home side picked up a 57-shot win to give them eight points and a comfortable mid-table position.
Alcester’s winners were David Hodgson (21-6), Ken Harvey and Jean Sherrington (both 21-7), Jean Bannister (21-8), Dave Hovell (21-12) and Trish Barry (21-13).
Both Alcester teams in Division Seven of the S&W Birmingham Over 60s League extended their winning runs.
The A team hosted Co-Op C and once more all six Alcester players were successful. There were superb wins for David Whittington (21-0), Renny Bannister (21-4) and Ken Harvey and Margaret D’Elia (both 21-6), whilst Jean Bannister (21-9) and John Slater (21-16) completed this 85-shot triumph.
The B team visited Hockley Heath B and came away with a 14-shot victory. Excellent winning cards from Jean Craddock (21-8) and Christine Anderson (21-9) were backed up by David Hodgson (21-15) and Ken Craddock (21-20).
The ten points accrued lifted Alcester to fifth place, a single point behind Woodbourne B.
Alcester A dropped to bottom place in Division One of the Yardley Wood League as a result of their defeat by 39 shots at Wythall. Alcester had only two winners – John Alderson (21-16) and John Slater (21-18).
Division Two of the Heart of England League saw Alcester A pick up another valuable win, this time at home to King George VI A. Big wins for Jean Bannister (21-7) and John Alderson (21-8) were well supported by Dave Hovell (21-10) and John Slater and Margaret D’Elia (both 21-12) to give Alcester a 37-shot victory.
The 15 points gained almost wipes out any relegation fears.
In Division Four the B team also seem safe in mid-table despite a 68-shot defeat at Warstock where only David Sutor (21-18) could produce a winning card.
In the over 60s section of the Heart of England League, Alcester’s B team travelled to table-toppers Acocks Green/College B for a rearranged Division Five game but only Ken Craddock (21-16) was a winner as Alcester slumped to a 31-shot defeat.
They coped a little better the following day when they entertained second placed Colebrook B, going down by a mere six shots. Despite the closeness of the match, Alcester managed only two winners in Jean Craddock (21-10) and Val McDermott (21-14).
The club’s Finals Day completed the week’s action. In the final of the David Hughes Memorial Trophy (for players over 60), Renny Bannister defeated Gill Evans (21-7).
He was equally overwhelming in the Club Championship final, beating David Hodgson by 21 shots to eight.
