Alcester Grammar rugby aces show their prowess

Redditch Editorial 10th Apr, 2017   0

THERE was double delight for the Alcester Grammar School sixth form rugby team who have claimed two impressive tournament victories.

Firstly, the team won the inaugural Stratford 10s tournament in which AGS faced a strong pool with games against St Augustine’s, King Edward VI School and Southam.

However, Alcester kept a clean sheet in all pool games, emulating this in the final against Tudor Grange as they won by more than 30 points.

The triumph was particularly impressive as three players had to leave for Warwickshire county duty before the final.

The team then replicated their success by winning the Prince Henry’s invitational 7s competition.

Alcester scored an impressive 174 points in 70 minutes of rugby, enjoying comprehensive victories over Tewkesbury School, Prince Henry’s, The Chase, Chosen Hill and Christopher Whitehead School.

AGS PE teacher Jamie Richens said: “This is a fantastic way to finish the season and a perfect end for those year 13s leaving us this year.

“Our competitive sports programme is strong. We run multiple teams in rugby, football, netball and basketball and, coupled with the academic strengths of the school, this makes AGS a great place to study.”
