Alcester see off Kingfishers in pre-season friendly

ALCESTER continued their preparations for the Midlands Three West (South) campaign with a 34-8 friendly victory at Redditch on Sunday.

The contest between the two clubs is always highly competitive and this match was no different as Redditch put up a good fight despite the scoreline.

Alcester took the lead within a few minutes of the starting whistle with a try from Matt Alderman and then moments later their advantage was doubled courtesy of Shaun Nash.

Redditch successfully kicked a penalty and scored not long afterwards to take them within two points of Alcester and the game threatened to be a close affair.

However, they were to be the home side’s only points of the game.

The impressive Chris Howell scored next for the Red & Blacks against his former side and his try was reward for a consistently good performance throughout.

Mat Ashby slotted over a conversion to make the score 17-8 at half-time before shortly into the second half Alcester extended their lead with a penalty.

The visitors’ penultimate try arrived when Louis Smith threw a dummy pass and fooled the defence to run through the gap and score.

After being denied short of the line earlier in the afternoon, Scott McGee was then rewarded with the final try of the day.

Unfortunately, Alcester had to forfeit their Warwickshire Shield tie against Rugby St Andrews owing to a large number of unavailable players over the Bank Holiday weekend and on Saturday in particular.
