All to play for at top and bottom

THE BATTLE for the Swan Studley Skittles League runners-up spot is hotting up.

Third placed Alcester Nomads lead fourth placed Engineers by two points and both need to win their last games to overtake Jumbo Jet Set, who have completed their season and currently lie second, but only four points ahead of Nomads.

In week 27’s head-to head clash, Nomads lost the first leg against Engineers but then took all remaining legs for an emphatic win.

Gordon Povey and Alan Cummings made 37 each for Nomads and Annette Upright 35. For Engineers, Mark Ganderton made 36, Luke Saunders 34 and Andy Clewlow 33.

Nomads finish their season with a tricky fixture against Lodge Farmers, who on their day are a match for any side, while Engineers remain slight favourites for second with, on paper, the easiest game against Swingers.

However, second bottom Swingers – two points above Alley Cats – will be looking for enough points to avoid the wooden spoon for a fourth successive year.

Alley Cats’ chances of avoiding bottom place look slim though as their final game is against champions Maudslay.

A few points better off than Swingers are Well Developed and Chris & Gerry Show, locked together on the same total. They play each other in their final game and both know that losing, with other results going in favour of the teams below them, could leave one of them as wooden spoon recipients.

For the first time this season, Well Developed took maximum points by scoring their season’s best pin total against Swingers.

Two stacks in the first leg by Martin Brennan (37, 13-stack) and Shirley Searle (37, 10-stack) saw Well Developed move narrowly ahead and they never looked back as Margueritte Bayley contributed 36 for a win which bettered their league position.

However, the result plunged Swingers down the table despite Paul Clifton’s 38 (13-stack) and Daren Harman’s 31.

Meanwhile, C&G Show looked on the way to beating Jumbo Jet Set after taking the first two legs but could not capitalise on an 11-pin lead and Jumbos won the remaining legs.

For Jumbos, best scorers were Mick Stanton with 39 (11-stack), Dan Hill (37, 10-stack) and Ray Jones (35), while Gary Hollis made 36, Rich Fisher 35 and Liz Hall 34 for C&G Show.

Lodge Farmers, with a third successive win, did not need to be at their best to beat Team BG who made their lowest pin total this season.

Behind after leg one, Lodge Farmers were stung into action and ran out very comfortable winners led by Chris Prichard with 39 pins (14-stack) and 34 pins each from Jason Kirk, Kim Clewlow and Glyn Morley.

The loss for Team BG, their fourth on the trot, means they finish seventh and only Lin Dyer with 36 and Ray Cartwright with 32 made good scores.

Team BG’s defeat allowed Swan to finish sixth as they beat Alley Cats, who could only manage a consolation point for winning one leg.

Results: Alcester Nomads 9 (328) Engineers 2 (318); Well Developed 10 (327) Swingers 1 (278); Jumbo Jet Set 8 (331) Chris & Gerry Show 3 (319); Team BG 2 (280) Lodge Farmers 9 (309); Swan 9 Alley Cats 2.
