Athletics club receives cash boost for coaching

BROMSGROVE & REDDITCH Athletic Club has received funding from a regional housebuilder to improve its coaching capacity in order to take on more aspiring young athletes in the future.

The club has been handed £1,000 by Persimmon Homes South Midlands as part of its Community Champions project. Each month the housebuilder donates up to £1,000 each to two groups or individuals.

Persimmon has a development in Redditch at Meadow View, Burrington Close, and believes it is important to support the local community.

The athletics club hopes to improve its coaching capacity to take on more young and aspiring athletes from the locality once daily life returns to normal. The donation will allow four new coaches to be trained who can each take on ten young athletes.

Throws specialist Sam Cater, who recently enjoyed multiple medal successes at the British Masters Indoor Championships at Lee Valley Athletics Centre in London, applied for funding on behalf of Bromsgrove and Redditch Athletic Club.

He said: “We are delighted to receive the donation from Persimmon Homes. Bringing in additional coaches will reduce the current waiting list in future for young athletes looking to join the club. Donations like these are a huge boost.

“We provide top-class training for the youngsters as we believe they should all have the chance to become future Olympians.”

Amanda Rogers, head of sales for Persimmon Homes South Midlands, said: “We believe in supporting the communities where we build and it is great to get behind a sports club which plays a big part in the local community. The funding for the new coaches will allow the club to grow in the future.”

For the foreseeable future, Community Champions, which has run since 2015, will be targeted at over 70s groups with two donations of up to £1,000 available every month in the region.
