Boss: League Two interest reflects well on Reds

DARREN BYFIELD expects Grimsby Town manager Marcus Bignot to take another look at Redditch United trialists Jordan Brown, Jordan Cullinane-Liburd and Jhai Dhillon before deciding whether to take his interest any further.

United boss Byfield said he was proud to see the defensive trio invited to play for Grimsby’s reserves against Rotherham United on Tuesday and understood they had all put in ‘decent performances’.

Now Byfield will await news of whether Bignot – who managed Byfield at Solihull Moors – will step up his interest in the trio, who have all impressed in a Reds side which has conceded just once in the last three Southern League Premier Division matches.

“I imagine Marcus will want to watch our lads again before deciding what to do but, whatever happens, this is excellent recognition for these three and for my team and Redditch United as a whole.

“To have a League Two club interested in three of our players shows we are doing something right and also reflects on how impressive a defensive unit we have become.

“The back five, including our keeper Brad Catlow, have been magnificent lately. We’ll wait to see if there’s any more developments with Grimsby but in the meantime I want all of our players focused on the job in hand.

“We’ve got to start getting things right at the other end of the pitch now. We’ve had some good training sessions this week to work on a few things and hopefully we will see some improvements.”

Byfield, who watched Gurjit Singh net a stoppage time equaliser for his side in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to King’s Lynn Town, is already looking ahead to next season as he prepares to take his tenth placed side to play-off hopefuls Frome Town on Saturday.

“I want a strong final third to the campaign,” said Byfield. “When I took charge ahead of this season I had just two players. Obviously it was going to take time to consolidate, which we have, but we want to push next season and what we do in the next few months will be important.

“I want to get players in place for next season where possible and really get plans in place. I’m trying to get ahead of the game and am on the lookout for new signings.”

The Reds will check on Eli Bako (sick) ahead of tomorrow’s game, whilst Max Loveridge is extremely doubtful.
