Engineers close in on title

AFTER another comprehensive win, this time over Jumbo Jet Set, Engineers need just five points to secure the Swan Studley Skittles League title.

Mark Ganderton led the way for the victors with 40 pins and John Bool and Brandon Kelso scored 39 and 36 respectively.

Engineers took the first leg by 15 pins and never faltered as they stretched their winning run. Main scorers for Jumbos were Rob Quartly (37), Dave Young (36) and 35 apiece from Rich Johnston and Ray Jones.

Second place is still up for grabs although Alcester Nomads look favourites following their win over Chris & Gerry Show.

The first three legs went narrowly to Nomads who led by eight pins before pulling away in leg four to lead by 17 pins.

Nomads then left C&G Show needing 82 to win, which proved to beyond their reach as their three-game winning run ended.

Nomads’ Tony Moore made 40 and Alan Spreckley (12-stack), Bob Browning and Alan Cummings 37 each.

C&G Show’s best came from Richard Fisher with 40 and 34 each from Craig Sears, Liz Hall, Dave Charlesworth and Arthur Sears.

Hoping Nomads will slip up are Maudslay who recorded their fourth successive win in overcoming Well Developed.

Maudslay lost the first leg but edged ahead by eight pins after three legs before taking advantage of a poor fourth score by Well Developed to open up a 23-pin lead.

There were 35 pins each for Maudslay’s Geoff Mayneord, Paul Matthews and Keith Fryer, while Well Developed’s best were Margueritte Bailey with 36, David Searle (35) and Ron Skidmore (34).

Likely fourth placed finishers are Lodge Farmers, now with five successive wins to their name after a see-saw game against Team BG, who have lost four on the trot despite taking the first leg.

Lodge Farmers hit back to earn a 13-pin advantage after leg two before Team BG closed to within five pins before the final leg.

Team BG finally left their opponents requiring 55 pins to win which, for the second week running, Lodge Farmers managed comfortably.

Glyn Morley (38), Alan Rumble (34) and Liz Long (33) shone for the winners, while Team BG’s Tony Moore made 40, Rob Baker 35 (13-stack) and Ray Cartwright 33.

The basement battle ended with a win for Alley Cats which lifted them two places in the table.

Opponents Swingers were playing catch-up after two legs when 25 pins adrift, but did well for the balance of the game to keep the winning margin to only two pins more.

Alley Cats’ Loz Gazeley scored 42 (15-stack), Sam Billyard 39 and Graham Batchelor 35. For Swingers, Paul Clifton made 36, Mike Pilkington 35 and Margaret Hendy and Christine Hallam 31 each.

Results: Engineers 8.5 (341) Jumbo Jet Set 2.5 (314); Alcester Nomads 9 (337) Chris & Gerry Show 2 (323); Maudslay 8 (317) Well Developed 3 (297); Team BG 4 (295) Lodge Farmers 7 (310); Swingers 2 (289) Alley Cats 9 (316).
