Engineers see off Nomads in Christmas cracker

TITLE-CHASING Engineers defeated Alcester Nomads in an enthralling Swan Studley Skittles League encounter.

In a cracking game more than 700 pins were scored as Nomads registered their season’s highest total, but still lost to Engineers who made the league’s highest team total to date.

Engineers were behind for most of the game but, when left a big total to win for the second week running, they made the task look easy by scoring 83 pins.

Engineers’ Ian Greenway hit a purple patch with two stacks of 13 and 15 in a total of 47 to share the league’s best individual score to date and team-mates Brandon Kelso and Pete Clewlow made 39 each.

For shell-shocked Alcester Nomads, Mac Eaton scored 44 (15-stack), Geoff Lout 39 (11-stack) and Alan Cummings 38 (11-stack).

Both Well Developed and Swingers had recently recorded recent wins to end long losing runs and it was Swingers who maintained that momentum by scoring their season’s highest team total with the team’s best individual score so far of 42 each from Daren Harman (13-stack) and Tony Howell (16-stack), whilst Larry Hanks made 34.

Although Well Developed led after leg one, the game slipped away and they finished with their season’s lowest team total to date.

Their best scorers were Martin Brennan 41 (14-stack), David Searle 33 and 31 each from Jim Child and Dave Bevan.

It is now five successive wins for Jumbo Jet Set after beating bottom team Chris & Gerry Show, who had one good leg score – the last – to gain a consolation point.

Jumbo Jet Set’s Rich Johnston again bowled well to score 41 (11-stack), Ray Jones made 38 and Rob Quartly 36.

C&G Show had Craig Sears making 40 (14-stack), Paul Hollis 34 and 33 each from John Hall and Dave Charlesworth (12-stack).

Team BG, bowling first, had a nightmare first leg score of only 45 pins to fall 33 pins adrift after leg one as Lodge Farmers took immediate advantage with a 78-pin response.

Although Team BG narrowly snatched legs two and four, Lodge Farmers were always in control and made their season’s highest team total to run out comfortable winners.

For the winners, Glyn Morley made 41 (11-stack) and there was 37 each from Alex Cull (11-stack) and Jason Kirk with the best stack of the week (17).

In Team BG’s season’s lowest team total, Rob Baker scored 39 (13-stack), Ray Cartwright 36 and Jordan Cockette 32.

At last an Alley Cats player – Anne Harrison with 45 pins (16-stack) – broke the 40-pin mark and it helped her team to a win over Swan.

Alley Cats bowled first and scored 72 and Swan’s reply of 58 suggested they were in for a difficult game, but they had reduced the deficit to only three pins going into the last legs.

Swan were then left a tough 66 pins to win but fell well short.

Other good scorers for Alley Cats were Pete Sollis with 36 and Sam Billyard with 34, while Bob Haycock with 37 and Graham Howells, Matt Reynolds and Dave Maule were best for Swan with 34 each.

Results: Alcester Nomads 3 (347) Engineers 8 (360); Well Developed 2 (294) Swingers 9 (321); Jumbo Jet Set 9 (321) Chris & Gerry Show 2 (300); Team BG 3 (294) Lodge Farmers 8 (333); Swan 3 (301) Alley Cats 8 (311).
