Familiar faces dig Redditch out of a hole

Redditch Editorial 22nd Dec, 2014 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016

Redditch 17 Five Ways 11

Midlands Four West (South)

THE OLD guard came to the rescue to drag Redditch to victory against neighbours Five Ways Old Edwardians on Saturday.

With a combined age of 136 years between them, Paul Green, Stan Hull and Glen Francis all scored crucial tries from rolling mauls to hand mid-table Redditch an early Christmas present.

The Kingfishers had started the brightest with good intensity in the early stages and the first score came from strong field position as Green controlled a fast moving maul all the way to the try-line.

Five Ways struggled for possession early on, but slotted over a penalty following home indiscipline.

Redditch managed a second score midway through the first half on the opposite side of the pitch this time as Hull could not believe his luck as the Five Ways defensive maul split and he buried himself through a hole from short range.

The second half was totally different as Five Ways came back into the game strongly and within minutes they were ahead with a penalty and an excellently worked try through numerous hands down the right wing.

For long periods Redditch struggled to get out of their own half, but looked threatening when they did. Mark Green made a good break, but the final pass was agonisingly dropped to the ground.

However, with their backs against the wall, Dad’s Army came to the rescue again as Josh Holt drilled a kick deep into the Five Ways half. It was not pretty, but it was another hugely effective driving maul that Francis grounded on his return from injury to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Redditch now take a short Christmas break before a cup fixture on January 3 at home to Ross-on-Wye, which is followed by their return to league action on January 10 at local rivals Kings Norton.
