Favourites Engineers claim cup glory

ENGINEERS built on their second placed Swan Studley Skittles League finish by winning the Summer Cup.

Although starting as Cup favourites, Engineers knew they could not afford any slip-ups, with the final being contested on a matchplay basis against Nomads, Jumbo Jet Set and outsiders Chris & Gerry Show.

After leg one, Engineers led with 18.5 points, with C&G Show just a point behind. Nomads lagged well adrift with 14 despite Connor Jacobs topping his foursome with a debut 12-stack, while Jumbos stood on just ten.

C&G Show then jumped into the lead after leg two with 16.5, just a half-point advantage over Engineers. Taking closer order were Nomads thanks to stacks of 15 and 13 from Gordon Povey and Alan Spreckley respectively, while Jumbos bowled better but still languished in fourth spot.

The third leg saw Engineers take control of the game and at that stage stood on 20.5 as Brandon Kelso set the standard with a 14-stack.

Nomads continued to bowl consistently well to pull up to second place, although 6.5 adrift of Engineers. Meanwhile, C&G Show slipped to third after inconsistent bowling and continuing indifferent form from Jumbos saw them continue to trail in last place.

Nomads then took leg four as the moment to make their big effort and, after completion of the leg, were level with Engineers, both on 17.

Jumbos also improved their game to draw level with a slipping C&G Show on 13. In leg five, however, neither Nomads nor Jumbos could maintain their improvement sufficiently to disturb Engineers who cruised to a 19-point Cup-winning finish.

Nomads and Jumbos finally ended level second on 14 points, just a point better than C&G show. It meant a play-off between the two highest pin scorers from the second placed teams to decide who would lift the runners-up shield.

In the play-off, Nomads’ Povey and debutant Graham Jacobs made seven pins each for a 14-pin total which proved too much for Jumbos’ Mick Stanton and Len Quartly who totalled 11.

Results and top scorers: 1st Engineers – 19, Brandon Kelso 41 (14-stack) and Craig Ellis 36; 2nd Nomads – 14, Gordon Povey 46 (13-stack) and Alan Spreckley 40 (15-stack); 3rd Jumbo Jet Set – 14, Mick Stanton and Len Quartly 36 each; 4th Chris & Gerry Show – 13, John Hall 35 and Craig Sears 33.
