REDDITCH athletics star Beth Lloyd claimed an excellent fourth place at the Midlands Regional Schools’ Combined Events Track & Field athletics competition at Pingles Stadium and Leisure Centre in Nuneaton, where the best multi-event athletes from schools across the seven qualifying counties competed.

The Hereford & Worcester junior girls’ team, including Beth, finished third overall with 7,719 points, which was an improvement on last year’s team result of seventh.

Beth, of Alvechurch Middle School, finished fourth with 2,920 points and this high points total means she has clinched one of the nine runner-up places to qualify for and compete at the English Schools’ National Combined Championships.

In the same category her team-mate Deanna Clarke from Nunnery Wood High School in Worcester finished tenth with 2,436 points, whilst Georgina Knott from Stourport High School placed 14th with 2,363. Katie Harris, from Nunnery Wood, finished 24th with 2,016.

Year eight pupil Beth, competing against older girls from year nine, was one of 28 girls in her event and she claimed personal bests in the 75m hurdles and high jump and enjoyed a superb 800m run as she led the field from start to finish.

The junior girls event consists of 75m hurdles, shot put, high jump, long jump and 800m.

Elsewhere in the Hereford & Worcester Schools’ team, James Dipple of The Royal Grammar School in Worcester, secured his place in the nationals in the junior boys’ event as he finished second, as did Ben Clarke from The Chase School in Malvern in the intermediate boys’ event to also reach the nationals.

Meanwhile, Linton Gardiner from Worcester Sixth Form College was representing Hereford and Worcester at the South West regional competition in Yeovil and he won the competition with a higher points total than he achieved as Midlands champion last year and he too will compete in September’s nationals.
