Kingfishers are up and running

Redditch Editorial 6th Aug, 2020   0

REDDITCH Entaco bagged their first win of the Worcestershire League Cup Group B campaign with a comprehensive nine-wicket success at home to Feckenham on Saturday.

Skipper Russell Southwick won the toss and elected to bowl but Feckenham started brightly through openers Luke Jackson (13) and Muhammad Idrees (17).

Visiting captain Jamie Griffiths continued the promising start with 30 before all-rounder Fahim Maan took on the bowling attack with an excellent 96 featuring 11 fours and four sixes.

Former Redditch pace bowler Noman Mohammed chipped in with 25 not out as Feckenham posted a useful 21-/6 off their 40 overs.

The Kingfishers’ bowling attack shared the wickets through Waqas Ali (2-45), Mo Zahid (1-50), Haris Ali (1-33), James Bevan (1-30) and Ghulam Moyhuddin (1-38).

In reply Redditch openers Olly Mason and Adeel Sajid started in positive fashion as they made 77 for the opening wicket.

Mason was the only wicket to fall for 34 caught by Jackson off the bowling of Maan.

Sajid grew in confidence and with skipper Southwick they dominated proceedings by making an unbeaten 140 for the second wicket as the Kingfishers romped to victory with 11.4 overs to spare.

Sajid hit a superb 119 not out and Southwick finished unbeaten on 48 for Redditch, who need victory at home to Belbroughton on Saturday to reignite hopes of pressurising joint leaders Astwood Bank and Pershore.

Redditch 2nds suffered a seven-wicket defeat at Bromsgrove and lie bottom of their group table.

Having won the toss at St Godwald’s Park, visiting skipper Dan Protherough elected to bat.

Haleem Basharat (22), Richard Stokes (28) and Protherough (27) all got good starts but failed to kick on as Redditch slipped to 90-4.

Wicketkeeper Adam Gailey top-scored with 32 and a sprightly 19 not out from Faheem Shahid saw Redditch finish on 172-6 off their 40 overs. Freddie Fellows took 3-36 and Will Tuffin chipped in with 2-34.

Redditch needed early wickets and the bowlers duly obliged as Nathan Jukes and Tom Green were both dismissed cheaply off the bowling of Amaan Malik.

Alistair Hickman (34) and Lewis Cordes steadied the ship but Sahil Mahmood bounced back by trapping Hickman leg before.

However, Matt Russell with an excellent unbeaten 68 and Cordes with 51 not out added 121 to see Bromsgrove home with 6.3 overs to spare.

On Saturday the Kingfishers have another tough away fixture at Barnt Green.

The 4ths’ away fixture at Stourport was conceded by the home side and on Sunday skipper Adam Sharp takes his side to Belbroughton.
