REIS Woolley’s late strike rescued a point for Alvechurch as they drew 2-2 at Continental Star in the Midland Football League Premier Division on Wednesday.
The visitors appeared to be leaving empty-handed after Josh O’Garro’s stunning long range strike had given the hosts a seemingly decisive advantage.
However, a frenetic second half ended with Lee Knight’s side salvaging a point in the 87th minute when Craig Thomas’ fine through ball released Woolley to fire home emphatically from the edge of the box.
The first half was a largely forgettable affair but it came to life in the 41st minute when Alvechurch took the lead through Luke Dugmore’s excellent low finish after Star had failed to fully clear a set piece.
There was still time for the hosts to draw level a minute before the break and it was in controversial fashion as a handball decision went against the visitors and O’Garro tucked away the resulting penalty.
There was disappointment for Alvechurch last Thursday when they were beaten in the Worcestershire Senior Urn semi-finals by lower ranked Malvern Town, who won 6-5 on penalties at Lye Meadow after a 2-2 draw to book a place in the final against favourites Highgate United.
On Saturday 12th placed Alvechurch host title-chasing Long Eaton United, before travelling to mid-table Stourport Swifts on Tuesday.
