Maudslay edge closer to the title

Redditch Editorial 28th Mar, 2017   0

TABLE-TOPPING Maudslay need just four more points from their last two games – with 20 on offer – to secure the Swan Studley Skittles League title following a very narrow win over Alcester Nomads.

Nomads bowled first and led by two pins after leg one, only for Maudslay to turn the tables to lead by three pins after leg three.

Nomads took leg four to regain the lead by three pins and finally left Maudslay wanting 62 pins to win. Last man for Maudslay, Keith Fryer, then kept his nerve to see his side over the line.

Paul Matthews topped scored for the winners with 38 pins and team-mates Stu Griffiths made 36 and Keith Fryer 35 (11-stack).

For Nomads, Geoff Lout made 38 (12-stack), Mac Eaton 37 and Eddie Upright 35.

Second placed Jumbo Jet Set’s win by 34 pins against Swingers suggests it was comfortable.

It was, but only after surviving a real scare in leg one when Jumbos bowled first, made a poor 51-pin total and were relieved when Swingers could only muster 47 in reply.

Jumbos then took control with Len Quartly making 43, despite creating two chances to make double-figure stacks, only to squander them both by embarrassingly missing with the third ball.

However, team-mate Dave Holland made a 14-stack on the way to a 39 total and Geoff Turrell scored 38.

Swingers had Paul Clifton also showing how to make a stack (13) in a total of 42, whilst Sue Harman and Russell Victory scored 34 and 33 respectively.

Engineers, lying third and with a game in hand, remain slight favourites for the runners-up spot following their win over Chris & Gerry Show.

After taking the first two legs, Engineers looked well on the way to a maximum ten-point haul, but were pegged back by C&G Show who took two of the remaining three legs.

Left to score 76 in the last leg to win, C&G Show made a good fist of it but fell just short.

Engineers’ winning total was one of their lowest scores of the season, so they were pleased to have earned eight points as Phil Jones made 38, Andy Clewlow 35 and Ian Greenway 34.

Plucky C&G Show had scores of 34 each from Richard Fisher, Rita Passey and Craig Sears.

Lodge Farmers pushed opponents Well Developed towards the bottom of the table with a big win, but not until the losers had taken a ten-pin lead after leg one.

Lodge Farmers have found Well Developed a bit of a bogey team in the past, but were in no mood to allow a repeat and took a narrow lead after leg two and pulled away by winning each of the last three legs comfortably.

For the winners, Chris Prichard made 40 (13-stack), Alex Cull 38 (12-stack) and Tim Jones 38 (12-stack).

Margueritte Bayley made 34 for the losers, as did Martin Brennan, who has bowled well all season, while Terry Buck scored 33.

There was a four-place climb for Swan to banish any thoughts of the wooden spoon spot as they saw off mid-table Team BG.

Down by nine pins after leg one, Swan recovered well to take all four remaining legs and run out comfortable victors, with Graham Howells – back after a short absence – making 38. There were 35s from Bob Haycock, Andy Reynolds and Scott Reynolds.

In reply, Team BG’s Nina Moore made 36 and Mary Withers and Lin Dyer 34 each.

Results: Maudslay 7 (320 pins) Alcester Nomads 4 (318); Jumbo Jet Set 9 (334) Swingers 2 (300); Chris & Gerry Show 3 (306) Engineers 8 (314); Lodge Farmers 9 (340) Well Developed 2 (304); Swan 9 (332) Team BG 2 (316).
