Maudslay go top despite another Nomads victory

Redditch Editorial 19th Feb, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

DESPITE extending their winning sequence to ten games, Alcester Nomads lost top spot in the Swan Studley Skittles League after only one week as they lost three legs to Mixtures, allowing Maudslay to move to the summit.

Nomads also needed an 86-pin fourth leg to finally see off tenacious opponents, who finished with their season’s highest total.

For Mixtures, Tom Fletcher and Colin Smith made 36 each, with Gwyn McDonald 35.

Best for Nomads were Eddie Upright 44 (12-stack), Mac Eaton 42 (13-stack) and Geoff Loat 37 (12-stack). All stacks came in that big leg four score.

Maudslay, with Tim Greenaway making 42 (12-stack) and Mark Sanseverino 39, regained top spot after a comfortable win over bottom team Swingers, now on a run of five losses.

Good scores for Swingers came from Margaret Hendy 34 and Brenda Morris 32.

Less comfortable was Engineers’ win against Team BG in a tight game in which the lead changed four times.

Team BG finally left Engineers needing 67 to win – a difficult target reached only through their last bowler. For Engineers – ending a two game loss – Phil Jones and Andy Clewlow made 35 each and Maurice Wroe 34.

Team BG had Rob Baker making 39, Mary Withers 37 and Ray Cartwright 36.

Jumbo Jet Set nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Leading by 22 pins going into the last leg, they had a poor leg score to give Alley Cats an outside winning chance.

However, needing to score 74, Alley Cats ended just short with a good 67 leg.

Jumbos’ Len Quartly finished with 39, Rich Johnston 36 and Dan Hill and Pete Battle-Welch 33 each.

In good form for Alley Cats were Loz Gazeley and Pete Sollis with 36 each and Carl O’Connor 34.

Chris & Gerry Show look to be returning to form as they ended Lodge Farmers’ recent revival.

C&G Show were always ahead in the game (22 pins up after two legs), built on the back of good returns from Dave Charlesworth and John Hall with 37 each and Liz Hall 35.

Lodge Farmers, needing a massive 89 to win, which proved beyond them, still made the game’s highest leg score of 70 and had best scores from Tim Jones 37, Glyn Morley and Alan Rumble 33 each.

Results: Mixtures 4 points (319 pins) Alcester Nomads 7 (343); Maudslay 9 (336) Swingers 2 (287); Engineers 8 (325) Team BG 3 (319); Lodge Farmers 3 (300) Chris & Gerry Show 8 (318); Alley Cats 3 (305) Jumbo Jet Set 8 (311).
