A MIXED squad of Alcester first and second team players prevailed against a strong Evesham side in Saturday’s friendly.

From the outset Alcester’s pack was in control as Max Tailby and Josh Phillips both impressed and Alcester dominated both possession and territory early on.

In better conditions Alcester would likely have been clear in the first quarter, but time and again the ball was spilled on a rain-soaked afternoon.

The first try came from Jack Green, playing out of position at scrum half, with Phil Birks the unlikely kicker of the successful conversion.

With a 7-0 lead at the interval, Alcester made wholesale changes, bringing on a new front row and number 8 James Bates to make his debut at senior level.

Winger Alex Chiles extended the lead to 12-0 and the pace ace, who threatened all afternoon, was rightly named man of the match.

Evesham did rally late on and a try gave them some hope but, at 12-7, Alcester killed off any thoughts of a home comeback when prop Kyran Flynn charged through to score a try which was successfully converted by Jack Green.

This was a useful workout ahead of league games to come for Alcester. The first team host Old Wheatleyans in Midlands Three West (South) on Saturday and the 2nds take on Claverdon 2nds.

ALCESTER broke into new territory on Sunday with their first match played by a girls’ team.

On the back of the promotion of the first team, the club have continued to expand their mini and junior section through a continued liaison between Warwickshire RFU, the club and local high schools.

The U13 girls’ team joined players from across Warwickshire and surrounding areas at Leamington RFC for an exciting event featuring more than 100 girls.

On a bitterly cold afternoon the Alcester team – combined with players from Birmingham Exiles – lost their first game and won the next one.

Coach Debbie Burgess is proud of how far the girls have come in such a short space of time by showing such determination week in, week out.

Alcester RFC is a fully inclusive club and welcome new players, boys and girls, from the age of five. For more details contact coach co-ordinator Scott Carmichael on 07810 437878 or recruitment officer Dave Marriott-Woods on 07823 536083.
