Mixtures find the right mix

LOWLY Mixtures dented Swan’s recent rapid rise up the Swan Studley Skittles League table as Swan recorded their lowest season’s total in week 16.

Swan looked likely winners when leading by eight pins after leg three, only for Mixtures to respond with a good fourth leg and give themselves a four-pin lead.

Swan never got back into the game and narrowly lost the last leg to give Mixtures an unexpected win.

Mixtures’ captain John Green made 38 (13-stack), Colin Smith 35 and John Day 34. Best for Swan was a 42 (13-stack) from Graham Howells and 30 each from Helen Racki and Andy Reynolds.

It is now two successive wins for Well Developed after they surprisingly ended Alley Cats’ four-game winning run. Alley Cats looked favourites to win again when leading by six pins after leg two, but Well Developed turned the tables to be 15 pins up after leg three.

Alley Cats halved the deficit in leg four, only to see their opponents pull away in the last leg.

In great form for the winners was Liz Hindson 40 (12-stack), with 34 each from Ron Skidmore (14-stack), Jim Child and Janina Brennan. Alley Cats scored best through Anne O’Connor 36, Moira Gazeley 33 and Pete Sollis 32.

After four straight losses, there was a welcome win for Lodge Farmers as they comfortably overcame Swingers, who are beginning to become marooned in bottom spot.

Swingers took the first leg by a single pin and this stung Farmers into action as they took the remaining four legs for a big win.

For Farmers, Jason Kirk made 38 (14-stack), Tim Jones 35 and Glyn Morley 33, while Swingers had 34 each from Brenda Morris and Brenda Leake and 33 from Paul Clifton.

Maudslay recovered from the previous week’s loss to take maximum points against Team BG.

Maudslay were only three pins up after leg one, but won the next leg by 25 pins which effectively won the game before stretching their lead over the remaining legs for a big winning margin.

Tom Roberts scored 39 (10-stack) and Dean Watson and Keith Fryer 35 each for the league leaders. Team BG’s total was their season’s lowest despite good scoring from Rob Baker 36, Gail Stringer 35 and Margaret Sanders 34.

The third team in week 16 to record a season’s lowest total were Engineers in losing to Alcester Nomads, who are now on an eight-game winning run.

For the third week running, Engineers lost the first two legs before staging a modest mid-game recovery, but they could not sustain it, while Nomads maintained their excellent form on the back of good scores of 36 each from Gordon Povey (13-stack), Bob Browning (11-stack) and Geoff Loat.

For Engineers, Mark Ganderton made 42 (12-stack), Ian Greenway 35 and John Bool 34.

Results: Mixtures 9 points (301 pins) Swan 2 (296); Alley Cats 3 (295) Well Developed 8 (301); Lodge Farmers 9 (310) Swingers 2 (266); Maudslay 10 (329) Team BG 1 (278); Engineers 2 (310) Alcester Nomads 9 (333).
